Sky Sports will show live coverage of the Nationwide Conference throughout the 2001-02 season
Sky Sports have released the following statement:

Sky Sports will show live coverage of the Nationwide Conference throughout the 2001-02 season.

The clubs of the Nationwide Conference today reached an agreement for Sky Sports to broadcast up to ten live matches, plus any anticipated end of season Play-offs, across the UK and Ireland. It will be the biggest ever broadcast deal for the Nationwide Conference.

Matches will be broadcast live on Saturday lunchtimes with the regular kick-off time at midday. They will be scheduled in a prime position between the Saturday morning entertainment show Soccer AM and the popular afternoon results and round-up service Gillette Soccer Saturday.

Alongside the live programming, Sky Sports has also made a weekly commitment to showcase the Nationwide Conference with a weekly programme to review the week's action and preview the weekend's fixtures.

The deal follows the recent agreement for Sky Sports to broadcast live this season's match between promotion-chasing Yeovil and Hayes on Saturday 24 March.

Roger Moody of Sky Sports, said: "Sky Sports has seen the ever-expanding interest for Conference football and we're looking forward to covering the game in greater depth. The FA Cup and FA Trophy have introduced us to a number of clubs and we have enjoyed the quality of the football and the reception we've been given."

He continued: "Our viewers have also given us great feedback on these games and the recent success of Conference-graduates Wycombe, and the forthcoming live match between Yeovil and Hayes, all add to this growing interest in a tremendous league."

John Moules, Chief Executive of the Nationwide Conference said; "The Nationwide Conference is delighted at becoming part of a long-term relationship with Sky Sports. Based on the success of previous television agreements we are confident that Conference football will be a valuable addition to the Sky Sports portfolio."

The Nationwide Conference comprises 22 clubs with each season's champions promoted to the Football League. It is recognised as a breeding ground for football talent and, graduates include players like Les Ferdinand (Tottenham Hotspur), Barry Hayles (Fulham), Steve Finnan (Fulham), Geoff Horsfield (Birmingham City), and Lee Hughes (West Bromwich Albion), and managers such as Sammy McIlroy of Northern Ireland and Leicester City manager Peter Taylor.

A number of Conference teams have also made headlines with recent FA Cup replays against Premiership teams, including Woking [with Coventry in 1997] Stevenage [v Newcastle in 1998], Rushden & Diamonds [v Leeds United in 1999] Hereford [v Leicester in 2000] and Dagenham & Redbridge [v Charlton in 2001].

After the recent "anti-internet" feeling, it is being suggested that the "contributors and users of K's Web" sponsor the upcoming home match with Telford on Easter Monday. To find out more please see the match sponsorship page. Let's show Geoff we care!

Saturday 3rd March 2001
Kingstonian 1-0 Hednesford Town
One goal was all that separated the two sides at Kingsmeadow, although K's should really have won by a clearer margin. The goal has officially been credited to Mark Jones, but that is sure to change once he admits that he didn't touch it! An own-goal seems the likeliest answer to the "who scored?" question.

You can see today's line-up and also vote for the man of the match here.
[top of the page]
Result round-up
The three points move K's out of the bottom three for the first time since mid-October. Kettering's win at Southport helps their plight, whilst things look bleak for Hednesford who sink to bottom.

Geoff Chapple attacks "the internet" in his column in today's Surrey Comet
Geoff Chapple has attacked "the internet" in his column in today's Surrey Comet, which went to print with "CHAPPLE MAY QUIT" as their eye-catching headline. The relevant part is below:

I apologise to all supporters over the confusion surrounding the Hayes game. The game was always going to be played - regardless of what was being said on the Internet. People are even blaming our marketing manager Chris Richardson for the problems. All he did was state the obvious - that the Surrey Senior Cup would have taken preference over conference fixtures.

Because of the Croydon/Corinthian game being delayed, the Hayes match was able to go ahead. Our Surrey Senior Cup tie will now be played on March 8.

I have been aware of all the rubbish which has been said on the net. There have been calls from certain quarters calling for my head. If they carry on like that they may well just get their wish.
