Salisbury City 1-0 Kingstonian
Matt Finish

A first visit to the Raymond McEnhill Stadium in the historic surrounds of Old Sarum saw Kingstonian seeking their first win of the season. Salisbury, recently moved across from the Dr Martens League would provide the opposition for this Ryman Premier Division fixture.

Given senior debuts for the club were full backs Frazer Muscat and Joe Frimpong, whilst midfielder Giles Coke was also given his first start. Aaron Gilbert, meanwhile made his first appearance of the season out in a wide position supporting strikers Greg Ball and Reggie Savage.

Both sides started with vigour, with Ball and Gilbert first to try their luck. Glen Howes threatened for Salisbury, but the main threat was emerging from down their right side. Steve Strong took advantage of a Frimpong slip to charge down the wing before striking just wide across goal.

Strong's opposite number, Frazer Muscat, saw a long effort of his own go wide, but the Salisbury right back was enjoying every opportunity to get forward and after another strike wide of goal, saw his threatening low cross cleared by Jermaine Hinds at his near post. The returning ball found Aaron Cook unmarked at the back stick but his header failed to hit the target.

The second half start was again promising from K's. Greg Ball dispossessed Josh Thomas in a dangerous position on the edge of the area and laid the ball on for Liam Collins. The midfielder's strike was however taken low by goalkeeper Kevin Sawyer.

Salisbury striker Matt Tubbs was increasingly involved in the game, causing problems across the K's back line. Muscat downed Tubbs on the edge of the box, but Glen Howes was unable to make the most of the opportunity. Tubbs himself took the next free kick, only for it to fizz just past the upright.

Giles Coke had a chance of a strike on goal when the ball broke to him in the box following good work by Greg Ball, but youngster's strike was straight at the goalkeeper.

Liam Collins forged his way down the right wing to create an opportunity for Greg Ball on the edge of the box, but although well placed, the shot lacked the power to beat Sawyer who flung himself across goal to make the save.

With the game seemingly destined to finish a scoreless affair, Wayne Turk played a neat ball through to Tubbs on the right side of the box to slot low past Key for an important goal with only ten minutes remaining.

The home side seemed galvanised by the goal and went charging ahead for a second. Tubbs was unlucky to see a powerful header rebound back off the crossbar in the closing minutes.

It was certainly a lively game in which K's started strongly in each half before fading. The goalkeepers were not called into action often and so the odd goal was always going to decide the game.
