Kingstonian 2-3 Tonbridge Angels
ANGELS CATCH WIND OF A WIN
Three first-half goals undid Ks as they lost again at home - this time to Tonbridge Angels - as they battled a gale.
With the wind behind them the visitors used it to their advantage, with a goal in each half from Bobby Traynor in reply.
From the start both sides tried to make light of the weather and in only the second minute Christian Jolley shot over the bar after a short pass from Max Hustwick but within the minute Liam Harwood put the Kent side up when he shot twice towards goal. The second shot, found its way low through the crowded area.
The lead lasted barely four minutes as Jolley became the provider for Traynor, who broke through the defence before putting the ball beyond Lee Worgan in goal. Bashiru Alimi had the chance to make it two soon after but shot over the bar from Jolley's cross.
However the wind was starting to tell as the Angels were able to begin to use it to their advantage and Luke Garrard pushed away a shot from Kirk Watts and then Carl Rook was denied as his header pushed the ball towards the far post.
Still the goal was under pressure and on 23 minutes a rebounded shot through the area ended up in the back of the net from the far post, Lee Minshull claiming the credit.
Without some of the urgency went out of the game as both sides regrouped and a yellow card for the goal-scorer Minshull was about it, until, with the game starting to look towards the half-time break, Paul Booth made it a third as he latched onto a wind-assisted pass. Adam Thompson made a last-ditch attempt by trying to get to the ball as it crossed the line.
Further pressure on Kingstonian saw Paul Booth shoot wide and then Tom Bryant find the side netting.
With the wind now behind them the home side would have been expected to take full advantage of it, but Tonbridge's Booth saw an early free kick deflected out and then Marc Cumberbatch headed wide before Steve Ferguson was denied by Garrard.
Finally the home fans had something to cheer about. A cross in by Jolley found Cumberbatch, back defending, and the Tonbridge player could only head the ball over the back of his own goal. From the ensuing corner by Matt Gray, Carl Wilson-Denis found the ball in a melee of players only for his shot to be denied by Tom Bryant, who was adjudged to have used his hand.
The referee had no hesitation in issuing a red card and Traynor stepped up to shoot low as Worgan dived the opposite way.
However if this was the start of a revival - it was not evident until the 90th minute. Hustwick shot well over from distance before Worgan launched a counter attack. Rook at the other end outfoxed Garrard before shooting wide with the goal almost wide open.
Still Kingstonian came back and Traynor headed wide before in almost the last minute of extra time Lewis Cook, on as a substitute, cut around the defence only for his shot to be saved well by Worgan.
Once again Ks' recent indifferent home form contrasted with their away record. Kingstonian did show enough to prove that there are goals in the team and this should secure more victories on the way.
