Leatherhead 0-2 Kingstonian
Kingstonian grabbed a deserved victory in their penultimate game of the season in a result that doomed hosts Leatherhead to relegation. After a quiet first half, two second half goals from Bobby Traynor and Ryan Woods were the difference between the two sides.
Following his side's midweek defeat to Hendon in the London Senior Cup Final, manager Alan Dowson rang the changes giving Jake Whincup and Matthew Warren their first league starts as well as restoring Tom Bird, Saheed Sankoh and Louis-Rae Beadle to the lineup.
The first half was severely lacking in action as both sides were restricted to efforts from distance that either flew off target or were close to keepers Whincup and Chico Ramos. The best chance of the half fell to Warren inside the Leatherhead area, but he could only poke it wide from a difficult angle. The only other point of note was Ks' captain Gary MacDonald leaving the action with an injury.
Straight after half-time the game burst into life however. Tommy Hutchings found space behind the Ks back-four, his shot was saved by Whincup and when the ball fell to Greg Andrews with the goal gaping he could only smash it over the bar. Shortly afterwards Harry Ottaway could only hit the side netting before The Tanners missed their golden opportunity. Whincup's throw could only find Hutchings whose 20 yard lob bounced back off the bar, Ottaway's follow-up was well saved, but when the ball fell to Charlie Holness only he will know how he managed to miss.
With results elsewhere going against the hosts they stepped up their efforts in need of a goal, which left space at the back for Ks to exploit. Substitute Traynor's dummy allowed Beadle space to run at goal, but his attempt to chip the keeper was poor and floated over. At the other end Hutchings could only poke wide on the break before Matt Pattison poked a good chance wide as the chances came at both ends. Eventually the deadlock was broken as two substitutes combined in the 74th minute to put Ks ahead. Chris Page's cross found the head of Tommy Hutchinson who knocked it down for Traynor. His first touch left him plenty to do, but with his second he stabbed it past the onrushing Ramos from eight yards.
Soon after Ramos denied Traynor a second, Ramos had to be alert again to keep out Warren's effort. For Leatherhead, Ryan Dolby has managed to wind-up half the Ks team since coming onto the pitch and his late effort brought the best out of Whincup, who tipped it wide. As Leatherhead went in search of the equaliser needed to keep them afloat, Ks capitalised. Traynor's 87th minute ball down the line sent Warren away, and the youngster's cross fell perfectly into the path of Ryan Woods who calmly lifted the ball over Ramos to seal the game.
After a poor first half it had been a good last 30 minutes for the Ks, with the midfield dominating proceedings, the result ensures a top-half finish and will surely encourage Dowson in the run-up to a busy off-season.
