South Park 2-1 Kingstonian
Oh my god they've killed another cup run
It was a night to forget for Kingstonian as they exited the Surrey Senior Cup with little more than a whimper to Combined County side South Park.
Mark Hams continued to manage the side in the absence of Alan Dowson and set out a side blending youth and experience, a team that looked good enough to see off lower-league opposition.
The game started well enough for the visitors as Bobby Traynor's back-post volley was acrobatically tipped wide by South Park's veteran keeper James Wastell.
The first half was notable only for a lack of chances for both sides until the end of the half. Neither side maintained possession well enough and the game descended into a midfield battle. After 37 minutes the deadlock was broken as the ball fell to the host's striker Chris Smith. His first touch was heavy, but he still had time to slide the ball past Jake Whincup to give the underdogs a surprise lead.
Kingstonian's reply was immediate. Some good work down the left from Jason Henry gave him space to cross and pick out Jamie Byatt. Controlling the ball on his chest, his second touch was a powerful volley that left Wastell grasping at mid-air and levelled the scores.
The second half was far more lively. Traynor was inches away from touching in Stuart Duff's ball across the goal while Byatt could only head a clear opening from Bird's corner over.
South Park were also threatening, after a deflected cross landed on the bar, Smith's follow-up was cleared off the line. As the game was twice stopped for length periods following serious injuries for two of the home side, both teams pushed for a winner.
Stuart Duff's shot was tipped wide and Gary MacDonald could only head wide, it was to be Ks' final chance.
As injury time ticked into an 8th, 9th and 10th minute, South Park forced a number of corners. The final one in the 100th minute was to be Ks undoing. The initial cross was missed by Whincup, and put back into the area where Chris Smith was on hand to power past the keeper.
The goal sparked scenes of jubilation among the home players, while the visitors barely mustered the energy to kick off. Perhaps the difference in reactions here were indicative, as was the loser's on-pitch dressing down by Mark Hams.
Knocked out of four cup competitions at the first hurdle, only the London Senior Cup and the league remain for Kingstonian.
